The 2015 Momentum 94.7 cycle race saw The Bethany House Trust-team, in part sponsored by Peaceforce, raising R 84 623-00. The funds raised have been earmarked to be used as seed capital for a project to assist children who ‘age out’ of alternative care. What does that mean? A child in alternative care – living in a Child and Youth Care Centre for instance – reaches the age of 18 years, he/she, unless still attending school or pursuing tertiary studies, no longer receives the benefits afforded to children in terms of the Children’s Act.

Practically, most often, these ‘age out of alternative care kids’ find themselves without a ‘home’ and a support network to enable them to acquire the necessary life and vocational skills to become successful adults. The seed capital will be ‘ring-fenced’ and once we have reached our target of R1 million, it will be used to acquire a suitable property where these kids can live whilst studying and until they are ready to live independently. This is a huge investment in the lives of children who may otherwise fall through the cracks and not optimise their opportunities.

“Vriende van /Friends of The Bethany House Trust is a community support group, established in August 2013, striving in close conjunction with Bethany House management to enhance the quality of life of people in need. Once more, it has been a very blessed year and we would like to express our gratitude to every member of the community, individuals and businesses alike, who have supported our projects so open-heartily. MANY THANKS to Peaceforce Security Group for their generous support as sponsors of the jerseys for the 947 Bethany House team over the past two years – together we are making a difference in the lives of people in need! The 2015 Bethany House 947 sponsorship project is expected to add at least R 80 000 to the funding of the home for school leavers. In 2014, the proceeds of 947 sponsorship project enabled Vriende/Friends to contribute R 60 000 to the running costs of Dream Factory, the homework centre at Bethany House,” a representative of The Bethany House Trust said.
